Cathie Wood still expects the price of bitcoin to hit $1 million someday.

The founder of ARK Investment Management built the firm into an investor darling during the Covid-19 pandemic with successful bets on largely unprofitable, “disruptive” technology companies.

Wood, who developed a cult-like following as a fund manager, continues to be a big proponent of crypto and blockchain technology. Crypto exchange Coinbase Global is among ARK’s top holdings.

Yet she was caught flat-footed once interest rates began rising. Shares of her flagship fund have lost two-thirds of their value since November 2021, while bitcoin and Coinbase have fallen about 50% and 75%, respectively, over the same period.

Wood spoke with The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday from Cboe Global Markets’ office in New York City, where she rang the bell to celebrate the listing of five digital-asset exchange-traded funds.

Here Is An Edited Selection Of Highlights From That Conversation:

Q: If interest rates remain at current levels for the foreseeable future, are high-growth tech stocks and cryptocurrencies still worthwhile investments?

A: We just got a CPI report that, I think, stunned people. They expected an upward revision because of the recent revisions to the index, and you are seeing the market respond to that. The bigger risk here is deflation, not inflation. And we’re seeing more and more signs of it.

Gasoline prices started falling well before oil did. People are shocked when they hear this statistic. Commodity prices today, as measured by the Bloomberg Commodity Index, are where they were in the early ’80s. I actually think that investors are worrying about the wrong thing.

If we’re right and deflation is the bigger risk, we are in a very good place. Technology is deflationary. And so they know how to operate in a deflationary world.

Q: Did you follow the trial of Sam Bankman-Fried? What does his conviction mean for the crypto industry?

A: More people are now beginning to understand that FTX was a centralized organization with no transparency, completely opaque, and ultimately fraudulent. And what is bitcoin? What is the crypto ecosystem all about? It’s about the opposite of that. It is completely decentralized, transparent, and it’s like a giant neighborhood watch. You’ve got all these developers watching over it, you’ve got all the people using it, watching it and preventing the kind of fraud that we saw from FTX.

I remind people that Sam Bankman-Fried did not like bitcoin. And it makes sense. It was decentralized. It was transparent. He couldn’t control it. At one point, he thought he was the master of the crypto-asset universe. We believed that nothing could be further from the truth.

When FTX went down, the bitcoin blockchain didn’t skip a beat, the Ethereum network didn’t skip a beat. It was as though it didn’t happen.

Q: Crypto prices have surged recently on investor expectations that U.S. regulators will soon approve spot bitcoin ETFs. Why are investors so excited about the potential advent of ETFs that directly hold bitcoin and ether?

A: It’s going to be an easy way to access bitcoin. Now, it’s just much more complicated to go through Coinbase, but this will be regulated and protect retail investors and institutional investors.

So I think that investors take a lot of comfort in the fact that the SEC, after a lot of controversy, if it does approve [the funds], that will be a seal of approval that it didn’t have before.

Ultimate Resource On Deflation And It's Impact On Bitcoin And The Traditional Economy

Q: How high can bitcoin’s price go?

A: Our base case is around $650,000. Our bull case is in the $1 million to $1.5 million range.

Last year, a lot of people thought that the bankruptcy of FTX, Celsius and Three Arrows was going to be the end of bitcoin. And quite the opposite happened.

Q: Coinbase Global is one of the top holdings in your flagship fund. Are you concerned about the Securities and Exchange Commission lawsuit that claims the crypto exchange is an unregistered broker that should be subject to the agency’s oversight?

A: So far as these cases have gone before the courts, the SEC has been, by and large, not completely, but on the losing side of many of these suits. And we believe that the issue they’re raising here is so important that if Coinbase were to lose, they would appeal all the way to the Supreme Court.

America has checks and balances. I actually think this is America at its best. An entity where the head of the SEC is appointed by the president. It’s ratified by the Senate, but appointed by the president.

You have the judicial branch, which has been basically saying that the SEC has overstepped its bounds. And we’re even getting the legislative branch involved as well. We need real legislation if this truly is a new asset class, so that’s really what the question is here.

Q: Artificial intelligence is the hottest trend in tech, and many crypto entrepreneurs are pivoting to AI. Which one is a better investment?

A: They are going to rival each other mostly because AI is the biggest catalyst to innovation out there.

We did a “bitcoin brainstorm” around the convergence between bitcoin and artificial intelligence and how it’s going to create completely new divisions of labor around microprojects and microfinance. So they are both very big ideas. They are both transformational.

In terms of benefiting humanity, they are both important as well. A stable global monetary system is much more important to people who are in regimes that are either corrupt or don’t understand fiscal policy or monetary policy and put their populations through cycles of hyperinflation, and then poverty. It’s going to be transformational for them.

So if we’re thinking about those who are the most disadvantaged and vulnerable out there, I really think that a global, digital, private, rules-based monetary system is a noble idea and a big idea.

Shoppers Are Finally Getting A Break On Prices

Ultimate Resource On Deflation And It's Impact On Bitcoin And The Traditional Economy

In some cases, Walmart and other retailers are offering better deals on food and clothes than a few months ago.

The era of price hikes for consumer goods is waning.

Sellers of everything from cargo pants to patio furniture resorted to raising prices on items to cover higher operating costs early in the pandemic. In many cases, they were able to boost profits by doing so.

More recently, retailers have been stung by the pull back in purchases of discretionary items as shoppers’ budgets have been stretched and prices remain elevated for essentials such as food.

Now, inflation has cooled in many categories, which could further pressure their sales growth.

“We may be managing through a period of deflation in the months to come, and while that would put more unit pressure on us, we welcome it, because it’s better for our customers,” said Walmart Chief Executive Doug McMillon on a conference call Thursday. Walmart would need to further reduce expenses as prices fall further, he said.

The shifting landscape has companies cautiously approaching the holiday shopping season, which for many retailers is the biggest sales period in the year.

For shoppers, that trend could mean lower prices than last year and deals later in the season as retailers seek to avoid a glut of unsold merchandise.

“Consumers are under pressure and they are continuing to shift into experiences and away from the categories we sell,” Macy’s CEO Jeff Gennette said.

Revenue at some companies is already on the decline. At Target TGT 0.72%increase; green up pointing triangle, third-quarter revenue fell more than 4% from the prior year, and executives said that weakness hit nearly every sales category besides beauty.

Target earns most of its revenue from nonfood items. Macy’s sales fell 7% in the quarter to $4.86 billion, while net income fell by more than half to $43 million.

The average price of food, beverage, beauty and other everyday items fell about 3% in the most recent quarter compared with the previous one, said Christina Hennington, Target’s chief growth officer, earlier this week.

The relief could spur more discretionary spending, she said, but the inflation over years in food, household essentials, pets and baby will “take a while to overcome.”

As a result of higher food prices, consumers now are buying less, with some seeking out more store brands and shifting purchases to value-oriented grocery chains or larger packs, which can be cheaper per unit.

That has pressured sales volumes for companies from Kraft Heinz to Kellanova, the new snacking business formed from the breakup of Kellogg earlier this year.

“We certainly feel like the consumer has taken enough pricing and are working hard to mitigate any potential needs to take more pricing,” Kellanova CEO Steve Cahillane told investors earlier this month.

Companies in recent years have boasted about their ability to raise prices as a sign of the strength of their products. Consumers are continuing to pay more for items at some brands, including Ralph Lauren and Coach.

At Macy’s, average selling prices were up 5.2% in the recent quarter compared with a year ago, but executives said the increase was driven more by changes to what consumers were buying rather than inflation.

“Blazers are a trend right now,” said Tony Spring, Macy’s president and CEO-elect. “Blazers cost more than T-shirts.”

As the economy has cooled and as more consumers have struggled to make ends meet, “the days of proudly talking about price increases are behind us,” said Simeon Siegel, an analyst with BMO Capital Markets. “It’s no longer the badge of honor it once was.”

Prices for some goods remain higher than they were a year ago. Physical videogames, office supplies and footwear are among categories where the average price per unit was at least 6% higher in October than the same month last year, according to data from market-research firm Circana.

Those increases are still much lower than points earlier in the pandemic. Falling goods prices will help overall inflation return to the Federal Reserve’s 2% annual target, but they are also a sign of broadly softer demand.

U.S. retail sales in October posted the first monthly decline since March, helped by slowing auto sales and lower gas prices, according to the Commerce Department.

Walmart executives hit a cautious tone on the health of the consumer Thursday. Sales of groceries and health-and-wellness products grew, while general merchandise fell, including apparel, home items and toys, according to Walmart, the nation’s largest retailer.

It gained shoppers in the most recent period, but the amount spent per visit increased at a slower pace than in previous quarters.

There was a marked slowdown in spending in the last two weeks of October, Chief Financial Officer John David Rainey said in an interview. If the quarter had ended before those weeks of slower sales, “you probably wouldn’t have heard that tone from us,” he said.

Weather could have played a role, as well as people having less money to spend as a result of resuming student-loan payments, Rainey said. Sales accelerated this month when holiday deal promotions started in earnest, he said.

Walmart’s stock fell 8% in Thursday trading, amid high investor expectations and the company raising its full-year sales and profit outlook.

Some brands are seeing an opportunity to talk up price cuts and value promotion in their marketing.

Vans recently lowered prices on some of its classic sneakers by about $5. “I think we’re in an economy where value matters,” Bracken Darrell, the CEO of Vans parent, told analysts in October.

In some stores it posted signs that read “Inflation Has Not Been Rad,” noting it had adjusted pricing on some shoes to “preinflation levels.”

CEO Chip Bergh told analysts in July that the price increases it had taken on some products over the past two years had gone too far. He said Levi’s was lowering the price of several denim styles sold at department stores and discount retailers.

The price reductions won’t apply to items sold at Levi’s stores nor to any of its 501 jeans and are a small part of the brand’s overall offerings. “We’re talking about six items out of more than 120 we sell in the U.S.,” he said.

Ultimate Resource On Deflation And It's Impact On Bitcoin And The Traditional Economy

JCPenney is rolling back prices to 2019 levels on a variety of items this holiday season, including a St. John’s Bay cable sweater and a men’s Champion hoodie.

In August 2021, Walmart executives said inflation was helping to push grocery sales higher after a period of relative weakness earlier in the pandemic, noting they were watching the trend closely.

By the end of the year, Walmart said inflation was helping to push overall sales higher, along with strong consumer spending. “Fighting inflation is in our DNA,” said McMillon that November on a call to discuss earnings.

As that peak subsided, retailers last year said they aimed to aggressively negotiate lower prices with suppliers as the cost of manufacturing many goods started to fall.

In recent months, Walmart has focused on lowering prices to drive more store visits. Earlier this year, the retailer brought the price of a packet of instant ramen noodles from one brand down by about 30 cents.

Executives planned for the price change to make the noodles Walmart’s top-selling item by volume sales.

Cathie Wood And Walmart Aren’t Speaking The Same Deflation Language

For all the handwringing about the big-box retailer’s earnings call, deflation is normal in the goods sector — not some bogeyman to be feared.

The deflationistas have been working themselves into a tizzy since Walmart Inc. Chief Executive Officer Doug McMillon warned of a period of declining prices at the big-box retailer in the months to come.

But as a purveyor of goods, McMillon is talking about something very different — and actually quite normal — from what Cathie Wood and other deflation alarmists seem to have in mind.

In fact, a period of falling goods prices might be just what policymakers need to slay too-high inflation once and for all.

First, Consider The Context. Here’s What Mcmillon Said In His Quarterly Conference Call With Analysts On Thursday:

In the US, we may be managing through a period of deflation in the months to come. And while that would put more unit pressure on us, we welcome it because it’s better for our customers.

As he later clarified, he was mostly talking about Walmart’s “general merchandise” — so non-grocery stuff — and that’s nothing entirely new.

In the two decades before the Covid-19 pandemic, it was relatively normal for manufactured consumer products to decline in price or, similarly, for consumers to pay steady prices for ever-improving items (a sharper television, a more advanced mobile phone, etc.).

Indeed, a quick search of Walmart’s earnings transcripts reveals plenty of instances of management discussing “deflation” in the past 20 years.

That stands to reason since Walmart is in some ways a proxy for the overall goods economy. From 2000-2019, core goods inflation measured by the consumer price index averaged 0%, and there were 118 months of year-over-year deflation.

You might attribute that to a variety of factors, but globalization was the big one.

Ultimate Resource On Deflation And It's Impact On Bitcoin And The Traditional Economy

That’s precisely how the US has managed to sustain overall inflation near the Federal Reserve’s 2% target in a world in which the heavily weighted non-energy services categories have tended to inflate at about 2.5%-3% year-over-year.

There’s a reason the D-word strikes such fear into the hearts of markets and economists. Falling prices may lead consumers to expect better deals in the future, so they could delay purchases and slow economic activity — witness Japan’s long struggle to shake off its deflationary malaise.

Even though central banks claim to want price stability, most advanced economies actually aim for a small bit of inflation.

That’s generally considered the best way to keep the economy humming along and maintain a margin of distance from the specter of backsliding prices. Nobody should be rooting for deflation in the US, and it’s highly unlikely to happen anytime soon.

As Morgan Stanley Chief US Economist Ellen Zentner put it on Bloomberg Television Thursday, Walmart’s price dynamics may in part reflect its customer base.

She said lower-income consumers are facing the greatest financial stress (their credit-card and auto delinquency rates are rising) and businesses have been cutting prices to adjust accordingly.

But Responding To A Question From Bloomberg’s Lisa Abramowicz, She Also Downplayed Concerns That The Walmart Pricing Comments Were A Reason For Broader Economic Concern:

Good sectors I’m not worried about at all. Goods prices in the US have been in deflation for a decade leading up to Covid. That’s normal, right? We were importing a lot of deflation.

But that’s externally determined. I would be very, very concerned about a deflation scenario in the US for services, for domestically-determined prices.

For us to get to that broadly, you’re talking about an extraordinary downturn on the magnitude of the financial crisis in 2008 that would get that kind of price declines — declines in the level of prices. Instead, I think deceleration is in train.

McMillon’s comments may well say something concerning for Walmart shareholders. The stock slipped 8.1% on Thursday despite better-than-projected earnings, a slide largely attributed to management’s cautious outlook. But their macroeconomic implications aren’t particularly alarming.

The deflation that ARK Investment Management’s Wood has been warning of has a different flavor. She recently pointed to the weak trends in commodities, airlines and autos to underline her forecast for widespread price declines, which she expects will be triggered by new technologies including artificial intelligence, electric vehicles, robotics, genomic sequencing and blockchain.

I suspect that forecast is highly unlikely, and every mainstream economist surveyed by Bloomberg seems to agree with me.

If anything, the main risk to the price outlook seems to be goods inflation, not deflation. If billionaire investors such as Ken Griffin and Bill Ackman are right then we’re facing a period of deglobalization, the consequence of which could be goods prices that increase persistently in a way that we’re just not used to.

In part, Griffin and Ackman have argued that rising geopolitical tensions and the pandemic experience will lead developed economies to produce more domestically, even if it means higher prices.

Holding services inflation constant at 2000-2019 levels, that would mean higher overall inflation and marginally higher interest rates for the foreseeable future.

(Personally, I’m much more optimistic than Griffin and Ackman that nations will choose peace and global commerce over war and inflation, but the hedge fund titans have described plausible risk scenarios that everyone must consider.)

On the other hand, a bit of goods deflation is nothing to fear in the near term, and it certainly isn’t a sign of an economic downturn. If anything, it may be a key part of our path back to some semblance of price stability — and a precondition for lower interest rates down the road.

Goods Deflation Is Back. It Could Speed Inflation’s Return to 2%.

Ultimate Resource On Deflation And It's Impact On Bitcoin And The Traditional Economy

Prices of durables have been falling for five straight months.

After a historic run-up in inflation, Americans are now starting to see something they haven’t in three years: deflation.

To be sure, deflation—that is, falling prices—is largely confined to appliances, furniture, used cars and other goods.

Economywide deflation, when prices of most goods and services continuously fall, isn’t in the cards.

But economists say goods prices likely have further to fall, which will ease inflation’s return to the Federal Reserve’s 2% target, perhaps as early as the second half of next year.

Prices for long-lasting items, known as durable goods, have fallen on a year-over-year basis for five straight months. In October, they were down 2.6% from their peak in September 2022, according to data released Thursday by the Commerce Department.

That has helped bring down core inflation, which excludes the volatile food and energy categories, to 3.5% in October, from 5.5% in September 2022, as measured by the personal-consumption expenditures price index, the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge.

The prices of services such as home rental and car insurance continue to climb, albeit at a slowing pace. They were up 4.4% in October from a year earlier, slower than 4.7% in September but well above their pace before the pandemic.

Ultimate Resource On Deflation And It's Impact On Bitcoin And The Traditional Economy

Economy-wide deflation is rare and usually seen as a sign of stagnant or deeply depressed demand. By contrast, deflation in particular sectors is common.

Indeed, before the pandemic, durable-goods prices fell an average of 1.9% a year from 1995 to 2020 as globalization shifted production to low-wage countries and productivity improvements lowered costs.

The pandemic temporarily sent those forces into reverse. Product shortages, snarled supply chains and a surge in demand from consumers flush with cash sent prices soaring in 2021 and 2022. Durable-goods inflation peaked at a 47-year high of 10.7% in February 2022.

Research by Adam Shapiro, an economist at the San Francisco Fed, finds that supply disruptions such as those from closed factories or shipping backups accounted for roughly half the run-up in inflation in 2021 and 2022.

Ultimate Resource On Deflation And It's Impact On Bitcoin And The Traditional Economy

Today, supply chains are running smoothly, according to a New York Fed index. Demand, meanwhile, has been constrained by the Fed’s interest rate increases. Consumer spending rose 0.2% in October before adjusting for inflation, the weakest since May.

In a blog post published Thursday, the White House Council of Economic Advisers estimated better-functioning supply chains accentuated by weaker demand account for roughly 80% of the fall in inflation since 2022.

In October, the price of new and used motor vehicles and parts fell 0.4% from September, the fifth straight month of declines. Home furnishings were down 0.2% and recreational goods such as computer equipment fell 0.4%.

Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said in September that decreasing goods-prices were a sign that higher interest rates, by weakening demand, in combination with smoother shipping, are actually working.

Ultimate Resource On Deflation And It's Impact On Bitcoin And The Traditional Economy

But he has also emphasized that services inflation excluding housing also needs to come down.

Economists at Morgan Stanley forecast that core goods deflation will accelerate through the middle of next year because of improving supply chains and weaker demand. That will offset continued price increases for services.

As a result, they see PCE inflation falling to 1.8% in September, below the Fed’s target. They don’t forecast a recession. That is much sooner than Fed officials who, in their September forecast, saw inflation returning to target in 2026. They will release new forecasts Dec. 13.

Prices equal the cost of inputs—labor, materials, capital—plus profit. When goods prices shot up, it was partly because wages and some inputs such as energy became more expensive.

But it was also because limited supply coupled with strong demand enabled companies to expand profit margins. That suggested once those conditions subsided, prices and margins would retreat.

“If you think of the supply problems as pushing up the price, the healing of supply problems should be pushing down the price back to whatever the equilibrium is,” said Alan Detmeister, an economist at UBS.

For instance, a shortage of semiconductors held down production of new vehicles, driving up their price by around 13% over the previous year as of the first quarter of 2022. Auto manufacturers that year recorded windfall profits.

Vehicle production is now roughly back to where it was before the pandemic and prices have been flat since March, according to the Labor Department.

Dealer inventories, measured as a share of sales, are climbing but remain far below prepandemic levels.

“It’s likely that vehicles are going to be a downward push on inflation for a fair amount of the next year,” Detmeister said.

UBS forecasts inflation dropping to 1.7% in the fourth quarter of 2024. The bank also predicts a recession next year.

Businesses, having enjoyed strong price increases, are adjusting to price cuts.

Lower prices for lumber and copper, for instance, have held down growth in the average customer purchase, William Bastek, executive vice president for merchandising at Home Depot, told analysts on a Nov. 14 conference call.

At Walmart, the number of items with price cuts is up 50% over last year, John Furner, chief executive of Walmart U.S., told analysts Nov. 16.

“We’ve been in a pretty steep inflationary environment the last couple of years. So it’s good to see some of these prices come back in line,” he said.
