How To Travel Luxuriously Post- Covid-19, From Private Jets To Hotel Buyouts

If you’ve ever wanted a spa resort—or dude ranch—all to yourself, now’s the time. In the name of social distancing, high-end hotels and travel companies are selling pampered privacy. And it doesn’t come cheap. How To Travel Luxuriously Post- Covid-19, From Private Jets To Hotel Buyouts

NOW THAT Covid-19 has made extroverts into agoraphobes and sent even the most social of butterflies back into the cocoon, the loonily extravagant world of private jets, cliff-side villas and ultra-exclusive hotels has begun to seem…strangely sensible.

Last month, Jack Ezon, founder and managing partner of Embark Beyond, sent three families to the Preserve Club & Residences in Rhode Island to recreate a 10-day summer camp their young children would otherwise have missed.

Each family of four had a three-bedroom house to themselves, a shared counselor to do all the wrangling, two activities a day—from shooting clay pigeons to tie-dying T-shirts—all their food provided, including a private chef for one meal a day, and full access to the 3,500-acre sporting resort. Price tag: $45,160 per family.

It’s no wonder travelers are seeking the heightened control that so-called private travel affords, given that coronavirus cases are spiking in many parts of the U.S. and a whole passport’s worth of countries has forbidden Americans entry.

“Everyone’s comfort level is different,” said Stacy Fischer-Rosenthal, president of Fischer Travel Enterprises in New York, who notes that only about 35% of her clientele is currently traveling, when it’s typically about 95% at this time of year. “But safety is the new luxury.”

The high-end travel industry is seizing the moment, marketing    everything from a beekeeping tutorial to a zip line through a forest as a “private” experience. Dunton River Camp—eight luxury tents on a 19th-century cattle ranch in Colorado, 4 miles from its sister resort Dunton Hot Springs—reopened in June as an exclusive-use-only property (meaning one family or group at a time) available for $15,000 a night for up to 16 guests.

“We customized to give [guests] the option of not being with anyone else,” said Edoardo Rossi, executive vice president of Dunton Hot Springs, Inc.

“We’re here to make people forget what’s happening around the world and to escape.”

Even if you’re not an angel investor or part of a royal family, it’s increasingly possible to book a hotel floor with a private elevator (at the Dupont Circle hotel in Washington D.C., for example, which reopens in September), or take over a train that gives exclusive access to the Grand Canyon, or have a five-star gym to yourself or even—as a perk at Caldera House in Wyoming, for instance—unwind at your very own working dude ranch.

It’s easy to dismiss private travel as a selfish indulgence just now. But hoteliers argue that it’s a kind of stimulus that lets them get some of a hard-hit workforce back on the job.

No sector of travel has been untouched by the pandemic, but hotels have been pummeled: According to the American Hotel and Lodging Association, as of mid May, 75% of hotel employees in the U.S. had been laid off or furloughed. Booking a room has a ripple effect: Some of those employees can start to trickle back.

When Carmel Valley Ranch, set on 500 acres in Carmel, Calif., reopened on June 30, the resort’s menu of small-group outings—from fishing to falconry—morphed into private or semiprivate activities.

The restaurants began preparing picnics for guests to pick up and eat anywhere they choose. Peter McMahon, managing director of the ranch, now part of the Hyatt Corporation, said the resort is rethinking nearly every aspect of its operations including minimizing contact between guests and staff.

“I’ve been with Hyatt for 26 years,” he said, “long enough to remember the [bursting of the] dot-com bubble, 9/11, the financial crisis.” The challenges of all those combined, he added, barely compare with what Hyatt has gone through with Covid-19. “Some things we took for granted—hugging, handshakes, buffets, elevators. This is a generational change.”

Travelers, too, will have to adjust. If an entire hotel is not private enough for you, try an island. For those who are willing to go farther afield—and have the means—there are a few not-too-distant private islands, such as Moskito Island in the British Virgin Islands and Over Yonder Cay in the Bahamas, up for the snatching. Some other possibilities for entrée into the private realm.

How To Travel Luxuriously In The Summer Of Covid-19, From Private Jets To Hotel Buyouts

All Mine Kenoza Hall, A Restored 22-Room House Set On 55 Acres In New York’s Catskills, Opened In June And Is Available For A Buyout, From $4,000 A Night. In Addition To The Hotel Spa And Pool, Guests Have Private Access To Kenoza Lake.

A Hotel of Your Own

Imagine you, your family and six of your best friends engaged in a hotel takeover—no rotten kids (other than your own), no tipsy bridesmaids, no unknown Speedos in the pool, no wait for the Peloton. Social distancing on tap.

To attract the supreme recluse, some hideaways like ÀNI Private Resorts, with villa resorts in the Caribbean, and Magee Homestead, a luxury spa resort within the 30,000 acres of Brush Creek Ranch in Wyoming, are available only as full buyouts.

Otherwise, it’s possible to create your own little Kennebunkport compound by taking all four cottages at Maine’s White Barn Inn, Auberge Resorts Collection (from $5,016 a night).

If a historic house is more your cup of tea, there’s Kenoza Hall, the restored 22-room 1880s boardinghouse that opened last month on a lake in the Catskills (from $4,000 per night) or Washington School House Hotel, an 1889 schoolhouse made into a chic 13-room inn in Park City, Utah (from $7,000 per night).

European-style Villas, Stateside

For those suffering from Europe withdrawal this summer, there’s a full menu of stateside villas. Among them: a fully equipped three-bedroom on Lynmar Estate, a winery overlooking Quail Hill Vineyard in Sonoma, Calif.; a deluxe cottage within the confines of Santa Barbara’s Belmond El Encanto hotel, where you can have private movie night on your hillside terrace (pet fees are waived); or a New England version at Chatham Bars Inn, where shingle-style cottages manage to capture the feel of grand old Cape Cod.

Or try Onefinestay, a vacation rental agency that represents upmarket homes from Milan to Mykonos and, increasingly, the U.S. “It used to be London and Paris,” said Amanda Dyjecinski, the agency’s chief brand and marketing officer.

“But now L.A. is our top destination for Americans. We have people who live in L.A. who are booking our homes there because they want the pool, the extra space and the services like private chef and nanny.”

Wildly Exclusive

Private guides can get you way off the beaten path. Isn’t that every germaphobe’s dream vacation? Mark Allvey and Christopher Brunning of Untold Story Travel usually concoct itineraries in far-flung destinations around the globe but have rejiggered their approach for Americans who need to stay closer to home—creating, for instance, swanky pop-up camps in the wilderness.

One such trip was a three-day rafting expedition down the Colorado River in Utah, with a chef, astronomer and rafting guides who set up camps on the banks of the river. Not exclusive enough for you?

Try a hidden town, about an hour’s drive from Aspen, where luxury travel company Blue Marble Private partnered with VistaJet to get guests into a 4,500-acre modern-day cowboy estate so secret that details are only revealed when the nondisclosure agreement is signed.

One divulgence is the price: from $180,000 per night for up to 70 guests, all-inclusive (except the plane), with a 3-night minimum stay.

Bulk Rate The Duchamp Healdsburg Offers All Six Rooms Starting At $8,300 For Two Nights.

IN THE AGE of the novel coronavirus, small properties are running tight ships. Many administer daily temperature checks for staff (upon arrival for guests), require at least a two-night minimum to control turnover, have mask requirements and rope off common facilities that can’t be 100% secured.

Here are four hotels that you can take over—guest list entirely at your discretion—for a fairly modest nightly fee.

Upscale Bohemian In The Catskills

A Beginner’s Guide To Flying Private

Chartering your own jet is still a pricey proposition, but as Barbara Peterson finds, it’s never been more tempting

A New Jet Set Demand For Chartered Flights Is Almost Back To Pre-Pandemic Levels, With Newbies Generating A Lot Of Business.

THE HUMORIST Robert Benchley once quipped that there were only two classes of travel: “First Class, and with children.” Today, as former First Class habitués shun commercial flights, they can be found just as often with the kids and even the family pet in tow—aboard a private jet.

Private flying, in fact, is one of the bright spots in an otherwise bleak aviation picture. Scheduled air travel is down by about 70% from the same time last year; for chartered flights, after a dip earlier this spring, demand is almost back to pre-pandemic levels, according to Doug Gollan, founder of Private Jet Card Comparisons, a website that helps consumers sift through the plans.

Much of the new business is from an influx of newbies to the private jet scene, industry leaders say.

“We’ve seen a definitive increase in new clients who are choosing to fly private due to Covid-19 concerns and the limited availability of commercial flights,” said Jamie Walker, CEO of Jet Linx. In March, the company launched a 90-day membership plan for a $5,000 down payment, reduced from the usual $17,500 admission price.

It drew so many responses that the deal has been extended until the end of 2020. Also this year, private jets are getting a tax break as the CARES Act waived the 7.5% federal excise tax on all flights until 2021. But chartering a plane is still expensive—often six to 10 times the tab for a premium airline ticket.

For consumers worried about the potential health risks of commercial air travel, it might be worth the splurge: You fly out of separate terminals, with no TSA pat-downs or mosh pits at the boarding gate. In-flight, you won’t worry about packed planes or sitting next to a mask refusenik.

Like any exclusive domain, the world of private flying comes with its own rules and insider jargon. Here’s what you need to know before you make the leap:

Check Out The Companies. In addition to Jet Linx, which just acquired an operation at New York City’s private jet airport in Teterboro, N.J., other big players include NetJets, Flexjet, XO, VistaJet and Wheels Up.

There are also smaller charter brokers like Velocity Jets that don’t own planes but sort through the options for you. Safety ratings on each operator are published by industry auditors like Argus(argus.aero/air-charter-operators).

Know Your Plane. There are dozens of models, but chartered jets can be divided into three basic flavors—light, midsize and large cabin (or “heavy”)—and operating costs rise accordingly. Light planes are smaller, with space for up to six to eight passengers; with midsize and larger aircraft you can fly farther with more people.

The swankiest models include spacious Gulfstream and Bombardier jets that can seat more than a dozen fliers. At the other end of the spectrum, you can rent a no-frills turboprop for a more modest ride—and price.

Do The math. For the first-timer or casual user, the main options are an on-demand charter or a jet card, which functions a bit like a prepaid card with each flight a withdrawal from your balance. Trips are typically priced on an hourly basis, starting at around $4,000 an hour for a light jet to more than $11,000 for a larger model.

Do A Health check. On a private plane, face coverings usually aren’t mandatory for customers, but most operators require their cabin crew and pilots to don masks since quarters can be tight. Like commercial jetliners, private planes also get a thorough scrub down with antimicrobial cleansers between flights. One final tip: try to book the first flight of the day on your particular plane, when it’ll be in the most pristine condition.

The Only Hack For Hotel Discounts That Still Works Right Now

It’s all about staying at the newest spots and booking with points. But like any good hack, the devil is in the details.

Whether you buy early, shop last minute, are traveling far away or keeping it close to home, there’s one truism to travel right now: It’s crazy expensive. So it may be counterintuitive that the best way to snag a deal these days is to stay somewhere brand-spanking new.

“New hotels sometimes under-price themselves when they first open,” explains Becky Pokora, travel rewards staff writer at Forbes Advisor. “It’s part of an effort to attract more attention and to determine what customers are willing to pay,” she continues.

Take the brand-new 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay in Hawaii. Its opening discount was 30% off—plus $100 to $500 in resort credits, depending on length of stay.

The strategy works whether you’re paying with cash or points, but the savings can be more profound with the latter. For one thing, points are an opaque currency, which means that hotels can manipulate them without reputational risk.

Points pricing can also be adjusted without affecting industry benchmarking figures like average nightly rates.

It’s not just that points discounts can be steeper. They can last longer, too.

World of Hyatt, for instance, charges fixed-point values depending on what category level a hotel falls into, and it reevaluates those designations on an annual basis.

That means that if a new opening gets placed at a lower level while it finds its footing, consumers will get a decent amount of time to cash in. The rates you see published in dollars online, meanwhile, can fluctuate in real time, according to demand.

Other programs, such as Hilton Honors and IHG One Rewards, have dynamic rewards pricing that keeps points rates closely aligned with the dollar cost.

Here, the advantage of using points is that you can stack promotions. In recent months for instance, American Express has offered as much as a 50% point bonus on sums transferred to Hilton Honors, extending discounts that much further.

As spring and summer plans come into focus, it can be worthwhile to look for exciting openings wherever you’re headed. Here are a few examples of especially good deals at new hotels we’ve found lately—all bookable through popular loyalty programs and in prime destinations.

Need more inspiration? These are the 21 best places to travel in 2023. And here are the 13 best new luxury hotels in Europe, some stunning new Southeast Asia beach resorts, 12 exciting hotels opening in the Middle East and six new luxury hotels in Ibiza and Mallorca.

How To Travel Luxuriously Post- Covid-19, From Private Jets To Hotel Buyouts

Andaz Mexico City Condesa

Loyalty Program: World of Hyatt
Opened: January 2023
How Much It’ll Cost You: As Little As 12,000 Points

Many of Hyatt’s design-focused Andaz hotels, including the Andaz Mayakoba near Cancun, Mexico, start at 21,000 points per night or more, but this funky Mexico City opening—with a dog-friendly “wooftop” co-working space and neon purple escalators—is currently charging only about half as much.

It’s set in an historic building with art deco details whose ground level is shared with the adjacent Mondrian hotel, smack-dab in the center of the leafy, artsy Condesa neighborhood. Right outside, you’ll find a large array of parks, shops and galleries. The rooftop Cabuya restaurant is fast becoming a local hotspot for its fresh Mexican seafood, a good sign that buzz is growing—as will the rates.

How To Travel Luxuriously Post- Covid-19, From Private Jets To Hotel Buyouts

Waldorf Astoria Cancun

Loyalty Program: Hilton Honors
Opened: November 2022
How Much It’ll Cost You: Roughly 95,000 Points

Sitting on 100 mangrove-filled, beachfront acres just south of the international airport, the Waldorf Astoria Cancun is an oasis for travelers who want the quick convenience of Cancun without the party vibes of its busy hotel zone about 20 miles north.

Tranquility here takes the shape of two zigzag-shaped pools, a spa with 21 treatment rooms and pristine white lounge chairs on the sand, where staffers arrive at the touch of a button to take your drink order. That’s comparable to what you’d get at Maui’s fiercely popular Grand Wailea, a Waldorf Astoria Resort where a redemption night can go for around 500,000 points.

How To Travel Luxuriously Post- Covid-19, From Private Jets To Hotel Buyouts

Le Méridien Maldives Resort & Spa

Loyalty Program: Marriott Bonvoy
Opened: September 2021
How Much It’ll Cost You: Around 49,000 Points

Most Maldivian resorts, including this one, have knockout overwater bungalows. But no other hotel on the archipelago has a hydroponic farm as large as the one at Le Méridien Maldives.

The 4,600-square-foot greenhouse supplies half a dozen restaurants at the resort and is even large enough to host private dinners. A kids’ club and separated family pool offer high-design amenities for the non-honeymoon set, which can be hard to come by here.

An outdoor movie theater and “Marine Hub,” at which you can learn about turtle and manta ray conservation, are geared toward all ages.

Add an overwater, ayurvedic spa and you find just as many bells and whistles as at Le Méridien’s sibling properties that use Marriott’s Bonvoy points, the St. Regis Maldives Vommuli, JW Marriott Maldives and Ritz-Carlton Maldives Fari Islands—all of which command twice as many points per night.

How To Travel Luxuriously Post- Covid-19, From Private Jets To Hotel Buyouts

The Madrid Edition

Loyalty Program: Marriott Bonvoy
Opened: April 2022
How Much It’ll Cost You: Roughly 76,000 Points

Ian Schrager’s influence on this Marriott brand has catapulted it to the top of the design scene. Wherever an Edition opens, influencers are quick to follow. The Madrid location is no exception. The brand’s signature white-on-white aesthetic provides an antidote to the peak-tourist location right near the city’s “golden triangle” art museums and bustling Gran Via. Its rooftop pool, the largest in the city, is a destination unto itself in summer months, as is the greenhouse-like Oroya restaurant overlooking Madrid.

Nonetheless, spring and summer nights are going for around 76,000 points. That pales in comparison to Editions in London and Miami Beach, which both go for around 106,000 points. (While those are more expensive markets, geography plays only one part in explaining the steep price difference.)

How To Travel Luxuriously Post- Covid-19, From Private Jets To Hotel Buyouts

Thompson Madrid

Loyalty Program: World Of Hyatt
Opened: September 2022
How Much It’ll Cost You: As Little As 12,000 Points

Not far away is World of Hyatt’s answer to the Edition: Thompson Madrid. Although many Thompsons, like those in Dallas, New York, and Zihuatanejo, Mexico, are listed as Category 6 hotels under Hyatt’s eight-category designation system, this one is almost inexplicably listed as a Category 4.

Even if the hotel didn’t have such a scene-oriented rooftop pool and floor-to-ceiling windows in character-packed rooms occupying two heritage buildings on central Calle de la Montera, this would constitute an incredible deal. Once travelers to Madrid discover the property’s charms, its rates are sure to rise.

How To Travel Luxuriously Post- Covid-19, From Private Jets To Hotel Buyouts

Kimpton St Honoré Paris

Loyalty Program: Ihg One Rewards
Opened: August 2021
How Much It’ll Cost You: Roughly 77,000 Points

The Kimpton St Honoré, which occupies a former luxury-brands-only outpost of the reinvented Samaritaine department store, now has 149 luxe guest rooms behind its art nouveau façade. It competes with a plethora of top-shelf hotels in the City of Lights with rooms that take in the Eiffel Tower’s sparkling lights and the world-famous Paris Opera House.

It has the architectural bones of a palace hotel, but comes with funkier design and standard rooms that rarely climb above three digits. (Not always the case with other fine Parisian properties.)

Here, “new” is relative. Since it opened amid the Covid-19 pandemic, IHG fans have needed time to discover this French gem, so points prices are lower than at sibling hotels nearby. Many guests will love it for the perks that it offers just by being a Kimpton hotel.

Brandwide features include an especially generous “Forgot it? We’ve got it” program that doles out everything from tweezers and apparel tape to humidifiers, deodorant and phone chargers; every visitor has access to in-room yoga mats and cute bikes on which to hit the town.

How To Travel Luxuriously Post- Covid-19, From Private Jets To Hotel Buyouts

The Leta Hotel Santa Barbara

Loyalty Program: Hilton Honors
Opened: A While Ago … But Rebranded In August 2022
How Much It’ll Cost You: Roughly 65,000 Points

Here’s a unique exception to the “new” rule: The Leta Hotel in so-hot-right-now Santa Barbara has been around for some time; it’s a former Kimpton hotel but has recently rebranded as part of Hilton’s Tapestry Collection.

Such rebrands may as well be new when it comes to points redemptions: At the very least, Hilton will treat (and price) it as such.

The Leta’s surf-inspired décor and such in-room amenities as Frette bed linens and Atelier Bloem toiletries are clear markers of a luxury hotel, as are the in-room turntables and vinyl collections. Yet it’s typically priced lower than its sibling hotels nearby.

Rates here are currently hovering around 60,000 points, depending on the season; that’s 10% to 30% less than the nearby Hilton Santa Barbara Beachfront Resort.
