How To Answer Your Family’s Bitcoin Questions This Thanksgiving
Could bitcoin replace turkey as the object of everyone’s attention this Thanksgiving?
It happened three years ago. The last time bitcoin went gangbusters, conversations in dining rooms across America were less about giving thanks than the fear of missing out.
“Should I buy bitcoin?” your uncle may have asked. “And what’s this about icy ohs? (Can you pass the turnips, puh-lease.)”
It’s evident things are different this time around – and not only because many will be clinking glasses over Zoom rather than their parents’ fancy china. Despite positively effervescent markets right now, it seems like the retail crowd isn’t buying. Or if they are, they’re being awful quiet about it.
But that doesn’t mean Mom and Pop aren’t interested in your fixation with cryptocurrency. Bitcoin has made headlines in mainstream media for breaking a new market cap. Also, due to the relentless work of such Ethereum chroniclers as Cami Russo and Matt Leising, more people are familiar with terms like “the world computer.”
Presuming your wallet is in profit, the folks may even want to hear more about this “Mr. Nakamoto” you’ve been working for. And just what is causing the value of this bitcoin to increase?
“Paul Tudor Jones and Michael Saylor caused the value to increase,” Matthew Graham, an actual investor and chief executive at Sino Global Capital, said. “We control speculative buying through judicious use of such tools as FOMO and FUD.”
Meltem Demirors, the chief strategy officer of CoinShares, is crypto’s own caffeine-addicted, fun-loving bomb-thrower. Your parents may recognize her as a key figure in getting the colloquial (and scatological) synonym for small-capped cryptos added to the Congressional Record.
Ouriel Ohayon, chief executive of ZenGo, a non-custodial wallet startup that produces research reports known to grind gears among bitcoin maximalists, started his career as a tech journalist, attempting to explain the French startup scene to the world.
Kathleen Breitman is one of the co-founders of the community-governed, smart-contract-friendly blockchain Tezos.
Matthew Graham is CEO of Sino Global Capital, a decentralized tech investment firm based in China. He will eat your hot pot.
Ahead of this autumnal feast, we convened a panel of industry experts to answer the vital questions you might expect from family and friends who haven’t thought about bitcoin since they opened a Coinbase account in December 2017.
Is Satoshi Nakamoto the Bitcoin CEO?
Demirors: No leaders. No rulers. No CEO.
Ohayon: To be the CEO, there needs to be a company. And Bitcoin is not a company, it’s a protocol. That’s point number one. Point number two is that it does not matter, at least, anymore. Ten years in, Bitcoin is widely decentralized enough to exist without a CEO … even if it is a company.
Breitman: Is Moses the CEO of Judaism?
Isn’t Bitcoin Illegal? If It Isn’t, It Should Be.
Demirors: No. Software and math are not illegal, although governments are trying to change that … [F]unny story: Cryptography – the reason why you can securely use the internet – was briefly banned and considered a weapon. Did not last long for, ahem, obvious reasons.
Ohayon: Like everything in life, bitcoin can be used for legal or illegal purposes. A knife could be used to cut a tomato, but also to kill someone. Because every transaction on the Bitcoin network is public, it is a very bad idea to use BTC for illegal purposes. So actually, bitcoin is the best anti-illegal currency on the planet.
Breitman: That would really increase its street cred.
Why Would I Need A World Computer If My Desktop Works Just Fine?
Demirors: You won’t even know you’re using it. Do you really even know how your computer works?
If People Can Go Around Spending Satoshis, Why Can’t I Go Around Passing Monopoly Money?
Demirors: You can, BUT, it will only work if people are willing to exchange goods and services for Monopoly money. Money is just collective fiction, even the dollar.
Ohayon: It’s the difference between paper and math. With satoshis is that you can’t print as much as you want. No one is keeping count of the amount of Monopoly paper in circulation or where they end up. Satoshis are just the opposite, mathematically proven scarce, and therefore attributable and spendable.
Breitman: I would encourage you to try that and see how far you get.
Graham: Why would you want to buy something with bitcoin?
Why are there so many coins? Dimes, pennies, nickels, quarters and the old half-pence will do.
Ohayon: Asking why there are so many coins is like asking why there are so many websites. It’s because every protocol brings a different utility and aspect to the digital economy.
I Always Keep My Wallet In My Front Left Pocket. Aren’t You Asking For Trouble Uploading It To The Internet?
Demirors: Why have a physical wallet in the first place?
Ohayon: Money has been electronic for many years now. Banks, PayPal, credit cards and many other monetary intermediaries have gone digital. But now, with blockchain, money can not only be electronic, but digitally native. The advantage is that you have a more secure protocol and proof of ownership, so you know that your money is your money.
Breitman: I bet you can fit two Ledgers in your front pocket!
Graham: You can try a safe deposit box but actually it’s a hard wallet.
I lost all my savings betting on bitcoin in 2017! My family didn’t eat for months. Now you want me to try again?
Demirors: Bitcoin isn’t betting. Please don’t bet on bitcoin. Be reasonable. Ish. (This is NOT financial advice, I’m required to say that.)
Ohayon: 2017 was definitely not a great time to speculate on bitcoin, if that was your intention. When investing, I would not bet more than you can afford to lose.
Breitman: Absolutely not!
If I Buy Bitcoin, Am I Not Just Funding Terrorists?
Demirors: No. The paper dollars in your wallet fund terrorism. The banks you hold your money with fund terrorism. Your own government funds terrorism with your tax dollars. When you own bitcoin in a non-custodial wallet, only you can spend that bitcoin.
Ohayon: Bitcoin does not belong to anyone, so you’re not funding anyone. You are usually buying it from services like exchanges and wallets that are usually regulated companies.
Breitman: No, sending money to terrorists is funding terrorists.
Graham: I asked Tether but on the advice of legal counsel they have chosen not to answer.
How do you own part of a bitcoin?
Graham: The same way you can own part of a dollar. Only it’s a religion.
Ten Crypto — Or Web 3.0 — Arguments To Bluff Your Way Through Thanksgiving
How to survive the most contentious day of the year.
We’re one day away from Thanksgiving, the biggest day for family discourse and debate all year. Of course in recent years, crypto has been a big topic around the table. And it will definitely be so this year. But the tables have turned. It’s not just the young kid who’s gotten into it. It’s super mainstream. So you never know which random aunt or uncle made a fortune this year, buying some coin nobody else ever heard of. Oh, and it’s not crypto anymore either. We’re supposed to call it “Web 3.0” now.
So without further ado, and in homage to Freddy Gray’s excellent bluffers’ guides, I’ve assembled 10 phrases that will help you BS your way through this year’s Thanksgiving dinner conversation.
1. “The internet is at a fork in the road: Do we want a future on Mark Zuckerberg’s servers, or do we want to build on top of networks with data we own and identities that we control? Because that is precisely what’s at stake here.”
Put your cards right out on the table. This is what it’s all about. Of course this has been a table stakes crypto talking point for years now. But with perceptions of Facebook deteriorating, and Zuckerberg giving us his vision of living in a cartoon metaverse where we don’t have legs, the tension is greater and the divide feels sharper. How buying random coins — whose main value is that they allow you to borrow and buy more coins — gets you to that is a totally separate question. But you can skip over that and if pressed, just point out that the coin represents some kind of control in the network.
2. “Imagine never having to come up with a username or password ever again. Your crypto wallet *is* your sign-in.”
Everyone can close your eyes and imagine whatever this looks like to them. It will sound nice.
3. “Could bad actors use the technology? Sure. But that’s the case with any technology. The opportunity now is for the U.S. government to embrace it!”
Obviously someone is going to bring up terrorist financing, or maybe they’ll worry about the threat to the dollar. But you’re a realist, and you don’t deny the risks. Turn it around though and tell them about how freely traded stablecoins could actually help extend the reach of the dollar, cementing its global reserve status further. And as for terrorists? Remind them that we already had this entire debate when the U.S. government tried to ban export of encryption technology up until 1992, but that now encryption technology is crucial for the web to function. But ultimately you can’t ban math. Show them that picture of the T-shirt with the RSA encryption source code. Embrace and use the power, don’t be threatened by it!
4. “The huge energy consumption of crypto is undoubtedly a problem. But some networks are using something called proof-of-stake, which requires much less electricity. And Ethereum plans to transition to that eventually.”
Some salty no-coiners are going to insist that they love the idea of all this, but can’t abide by destroying the environment. Good news for them you say! Those visions they have of huge coal-powered Bitcoin mining rigs are a thing of the past. (PS: Definitely don’t bring up that Ethereum has been talking about making this transition for years and years and it still hasn’t happened, with no clear timeline for when exactly it will). BTW, if you’re coming at the environment question from the Bitcoin angle your work is a bit more cut out for you.
Say something about mining with renewable or stranded or wasted energy, or how load balancing the grid can actually make some types of energy production more sustainable. Don’t be the loser who turns red-faced and blurts out something about how much energy watching TV or cooking turkey for dinner costs, as if that’s some kind of solid turnaround. It’s not.
5. “Memetic reproduction has always been the essence of culture. NFTs simply make this more explicit.”
This is mostly just an excuse to use the term memetic reproduction. But for real, this line probably has the benefit of being true.
6. “It’s all about the Elon Markets Hypothesis. If Elon tweets about it, it’s valuable.”
Just say this to establish that you read Matt Levine and then move on with a chuckle.
7. “Sorry, but there’s only one coin that’s actually doing what it’s set out to accomplish and that’s Bitcoin. Millions around the world are using it as a decentralized store of value, while political dissidents across the globe see it as a tool to escape authoritarianism. Every other coin is simply a centralized project attempting to separate gamblers from their money.”
Sorry Bitcoiners, you’re down badly this year. Sure you’re up a bit in fiat terms, but if there’s anyone else at the table who had other coins this year, your returns are getting obliterated. So there’s only one thing to do: Establish that you’re morally superior to everyone else. Talk about the people living under hyperinflation. Talk about political prisoners. Talk about El Salvador and Bitcoin Beach. Are any of these groups adopting the Floki Inu token? Didn’t think so. The degenerates may be having fun now, but just wait! In a few years, they’ll be crawling back, knocking on the door or your citadel asking for a spare couch to crash on. It’ll happen. Just a matter of time. Seriously. For real. One day.
8.“The fees are high, because space on the blockchain is valuable and worth paying up for.”
Whatever the fees are in crypto, it means crypto is succeeding. If fees are cheap, it’s an open internet of money that anyone can use. Hooray. If fees are expensive (particularly as they are right now on Ethereum), then it’s a success because it means that the service is in high demand. Hooray. Add that it’s like paying rent. The better the city, the more rent costs. Want cheap rent? Move to the middle of nowhere.
9. “Owning your own vault is cool. Owning your own liquidity is cooler.”
Mumble something about DeFi 2.0. Talk about the corner of the game theory payoff matrix, where everyone wins if they cooperate (3, 3). Honestly this just a desperate ploy to get people into some Ponzu with a 2 million% APY that you’ve discovered.
10. “Not everyone needs to use crypto. But I’ve never met anyone who started using it and didn’t immediately grasp its value. Whether its sending money across the world, playing a game against someone in the Philippines, or joining an NFT community, the only way to get it is to try it, and us talking about it isn’t going to get very far. Look if you want, you can just set up a Phantom Wallet, I’ll happily send you some Sol.”
This is your final pitch. Hopefully this finishes the job and you’ve reeled them in.
Crypto Thanksgiving: NFT Drops And Black Friday Deals Go Mainstream?
Holiday-themed NFTs and Black Friday crypto deals are sure to be appetizing conversation starters this Thanksgiving, but how will these offerings be received?
From the rise of the Metaverse to major brands announcing nonfungible token (NFT) drops, cryptocurrency mass adoption is well underway.
Americans in particular have taken a growing interest in crypto, as recent findings from the Pew Research Center found that nearly a quarter of 10,371 adults in the United States were familiar with cryptocurrency, while only one-eighth (13%) were entirely unfamiliar with the concept.
Additional research from online broker firm, BrokerChooser, discovered that the U.S. is the third most interested county in NFTs, falling behind Canada and Australia.
Given America’s curiosity for crypto, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the price of Bitcoin (BTC), NFTs and cryptocurrency in general are topics likely to be discussed at the Thanksgiving table this year. In particular, holiday-themed NFTs and cryptocurrency deals for Black Friday may be of particular interest.
The Most Interesting Mainstream Thanksgiving NFTs
This in mind, a captivating conversation starter may be about the number of mainstream brands and retailers that have begun incorporating holiday-themed NFTs into their product offerings. For example, Macy’s — one of the largest department stores in America — will launch its “Macy’s Parade NFT” series on Nov. 25, or Thanksgiving Day.
Dave Torres, vice president of digital marketing at Macy’s, told Cointelegraph that for more than nine decades, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade has reflected the very best of pop culture. Torres explained that through the Thanksgiving parade, Macy’s has created art in the sky and on the ground with signature balloons and floats.
Given this, Torres mentioned that part of the goal behind the parade NFT project was to better understand emerging trends while ensuring that Macy’s is prepared to embrace the next frontier of digital brand experiences. “As we immersed ourselves in this project, we saw an opportunity to align brand innovation with our charitable work for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in a way we’ve never imagined possible,” he said.
The Macy’s NFTs are built upon the Polygon blockchain and are powered by Sweet, an enterprise NFT solutions provider. Tom Mizzone, CEO of Sweet, a consumer brand NFT platform, told Cointelegraph that the Macy’s Parade NFT series features parade balloons from the 95-year history of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade:
“Each parade balloon has been carefully selected to represent a specific decade from the 1920s to the present, and each balloon has been captured and grafted into a series of 9,510 generative NFTs designed by the very talented NFT artist REOMETRY.”
According to Mizzone, the Macy’s Parade NFT series is unique for a number of reasons, one being that only ten of the NFTs can actually be purchased. “Those ten are only available via an auction that is live on Sweet now and ends on November. 30. The other 9,500 NFTs will be available for free on Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 2021, on a first-come, first-served basis,” he stated from an official website.
Mizzone further remarked that all the proceeds generated from the ten NFTs available for auction will go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, an American non-profit organization that helps children with critical illnesses.
In terms of the 9,500 free NFTs Macy’s is giving away, Mizzone shared that Macy’s is moving beyond traditional methods of charitable giving by setting an example in terms of leveraging NFT technology and smart contracts to deploy a perpetual giving initiative:
“Every time an owner of a Macy’s Parade NFT decides to sell his or her NFT in a compatible aftermarket, 10% of the sale price will be donated to Make-A-Wish. Essentially, you’ll have 9,500 NFT owners, when this is all said and done, and an open-ended future of donations to, in this case- Make-A-Wish.
As more retail brands begin to see the opportunity that exists with NFTs, Macy’s is setting a precedent of what’s possible in the realm of giving back.”
In addition to the NFT collection from Macy’s, American businesswoman and television personality Martha Stewart has also launched Thanksgiving-themed nonfungible tokens on her website, MarthaFRESHMint.
Following the drop of her Halloween-inspired NFT collection, the Thanksgiving-themed collection will be Stewart’s second NFT drop this year and will feature audio recordings of Stewart’s Thanksgiving memories.
Stewart’s licensed “story-telling” Thanksgiving-themed collection has been produced in collaboration with Tokns Commerce, an NFT solutions provider for iconic brands and creators.
Jamie Tedford, CEO of Tokns, a business solution for NFTs, told Cointelegraph that the collection features over 100 NFT collectibles that demonstrate a new take on iconic photos from the magazine Martha Stewart Living:
“With our featured drop, Martha has invented a new category we’re calling ‘Storytelling NFTs.’ This one-of-one NFT features exclusive audio of Martha recalling family Thanksgiving traditions and recounting the story of her first attempt at hosting Thanksgiving dinner — burnt Turkey and all.”
According to Tedford, Stewart believes that storytelling has become a lost art, which has become especially challenging in the past few years of social distancing.
“We set out to establish NFTs as a medium to re-introduce storytelling and resurface this little-known story of Martha’s disastrous first Thanksgiving in her new home. Her iconic voice track and accompanying original music set a new standard for creating a rare, beautifully composed one-of-one NFT,” added Tedford.
Black Friday Deals And Ways To Spend Crypto This Holiday
While Turkey Day NFTs from Macy’s and Martha Stewart highlight the growth of cryptocurrency, retailers, merchants and major brands have also started to support crypto payments in time for the holidays.
For example, on Nov. 23 Regal — a movie operator of more than 500 locations and 7,000 screens in 42 U.S. states — announced that it would be partnering with digital payment network Flexa to allow customers to use crypto to purchase movie tickets, food and beverages.
It’s been noted that Regal will accept a wide variety of cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Litecoin (LTC), Doge (DOGE), USD Coin (USDC), DAI (DAI), Gemini Dollar (GUSD), Chainlink (LINK), Cosmos (ATOM), Basic Attention Token (BAT) and more.
Trevor Filter, co-founder of payments platform Flexa, told Cointelegraph that the rising demand for digital currency payment options, coupled with the fact that Regal is about to experience its busiest time of the year, makes this announcement extremely timely:
“We couldn’t be more thrilled to launch this partnership ahead of the holidays and look forward to providing Regal’s customers and merchants with easy, reliable and safe digital currency payment options.”
In addition to Regal, Bitcoin payments provider BitPay has partnered with a number of its vendors to offer Black Friday deals to consumers paying with crypto.
Merrick Theobald, vice president of marketing at BitPay, told Cointelegraph that Ace Jewelers, Newegg, precious metal retailer APMEX and many others will be offering consumers discounts or prices that include no additional fees. “Consumers must pay with crypto or the BitPay card to enjoy these deals,” noted Theobald.
Bitcoin rewards app Lolli is also offering users double Bitcoin reward rates for shopping on Black Friday. Lolli provides shoppers with Bitcoin back on purchases made at stores like Sephora, Groupon, Macy’s, Nike and other major retailers. Alex Adelman, CEO and co-found of Lolli, told Cointelegraph that the average BTC reward rate will double to 14% during Black Friday.
How Will Consumers React To NFTs And Crypto Deals?
Although Thanksgiving NFTs and crypto payments seem to be more popular than ever before this holiday season, it’s still questionable whether or not consumers will want to spend their digital currencies on purchases or collect holiday-specific NFTs from mainstream brands.
For instance, Theobald noted that while consumers will likely spend crypto this holiday season, it may not be more than previous years:
“Black Friday this year already started happening for many merchants at the beginning of November, so it may not be easy to identify if spending will increase on Black Friday specifically. However, I do think that the rising prices of cryptocurrencies will get people to spend more on luxury items.”
Theobald added that while BitPay found that Bitcoin to be its most widely used crypto for payments, other coins like Dogecoin and Litecoin, along with stablecoins, are gaining traction with consumers and merchants.
“The ticket value on stablecoins is actually higher than traditional cryptocurrencies. This could be that merchants want to accept payments with crypto, so they are asking customers to purchase with stablecoins because of all the benefits of blockchain payments,” he remarked.
In regards to holiday-themed NFTs, some concerns remain such as environmental impacts and ease of use, especially for those not as familiar with obtaining nonfungible tokens.
With these challenges in mind, Tedford explained Tokns aims to make NFTs more accessible by removing the dependency on a crypto wallet. “That’s why we chose to build our platform on top of Shopify and to leverage Shopify Payments to enable credit card transactions, and Coinbase Commerce to welcome crypto transactions.”
He added: “Once consumers buy their NFTs, we guide them through the process of transferring it to their crypto wallet.”
Tedford says that over 90% of the transactions on MarthaFRESHMint were with credit cards, with the majority of these purchases coming from first-time NFT buyers.
In terms of the impact NFTs may have on the environment, Mizzone remarked that Sweet leverages the Polygon blockchain for a number of reasons, one being that Polygon is a proof-of-stake (PoS) blockchain.
As such, Mizzone noted that the energy Polygon consumes is several orders of magnitude below that of other chains. “If our goal is to remove the barrier to — and it is — then removing that potential environmental barrier is huge.”
