Does Bitcoin Boom Mean ‘Better Gold’?
Bitcoin investors have had a wild ride. The initial price, set in 2010, was less than 1 cent. Does Bitcoin Boom Mean ‘Better Gold’?
It’s since traded for tens of thousands of dollars having surged 305% in 2020 — but only after losing almost three-quarters of its value in 2018. Once seen as the province of nerds, libertarians and drug dealers, Bitcoin these days draws millions of dollars from hedge funds and companies, while PayPal lets consumers use it to purchase goods and services.
The surging price could reflect recognition by the financial community that so-called cryptocurrencies — digital forms of money — can be useful, and that Bitcoin in particular can fill the role of gold as a hedge against inflation better than gold can. Or it could just be a repeat of Bitcoin bubbles of the past.
1. What Exactly Is Bitcoin?
It’s a form of money that’s remarkable for what it’s not: It’s not a currency you can hold in your hand. It’s not issued or backed by a national government. At their core, Bitcoin and its imitators are sets of software protocols for generating digital tokens and for tracking transactions in a way that makes it hard to counterfeit or re-use tokens. A Bitcoin has value only to the extent that its users agree that it does.
2. Where Did The Bitcoin System Come From?
The original software was laid out in a white paper in 2008 by a person or group of people using the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto, whose identity remains unknown, despite several efforts to assign or claim credit. Online fantasy games had long used virtual currencies. The key idea behind Bitcoin was the blockchain — a publicly visible, largely anonymous online ledger that records Bitcoin transactions.
3. How Does That Work?
Think about what happens if you make an online transfer using a bank. It verifies that you have the funds, subtracts that amount from one spot in a giant database it maintains of accounts and balances, and credits it in another. You can see the result if you log on to your account but the transaction is under the bank’s control.
You’re trusting the bank to remove the right amount of money, and the bank is also making sure you can’t spend that money again. The blockchain is a database that performs those tracking functions — but without the bank or any other central authority.
4. Who Performs The Bank Function For Bitcoin?
It’s done by consensus on a decentralized network. Bitcoin transactions can be made through sites offering electronic “wallets” that upload the data to the network. New transactions are bundled together into a batch and broadcast to the network for verification by so-called Bitcoin miners.
5. Who Gets To Be A Miner?
Anybody, so long as you have really fast computers, a lot of electricity and a desire to solve puzzles. The transaction data in each batch is encrypted by a formula that can be unlocked only through trial-and-error guessing on a massive scale. The miners put large-scale computing power to work as they compete to be the first to solve it. If a miner’s answer is verified by others, the data is added to a linked chain of blocks of data and the miner is rewarded with newly issued Bitcoin.
6. How Does The System Prevent Cheating?
Because every block contains data linking to earlier blocks, an attempt to spend the same Bitcoin twice would mean revising many links in the chain. Plus, as miners compete, they verify each other’s work each step of the way.
7. Who Buys And Uses Bitcoin?
Prominent money managers like Mike Novogratz and Alan Howard have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. A survey Fidelity Investments conducted in 2020 found that 36% of institutional respondents held crypto in their portfolios. More than six out of 10 expressed interest in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, up from fewer than half in 2019. Amid meteoric price appreciation — Bitcoin quadrupled in 2020 — retail investors are getting in on the game, too, with many new users jumping into crypto.
8. Why Has Bitcoin’s Price Rallied So Much?
Long-time Bitcoin fans point to the so-called halvening that happened in 2020, cutting in half the amount of new Bitcoins issued to miners for verifying transactions. Halvenings happen every three to four years. Because they limit the growth of Bitcoin, they are typically followed by rallies (often followed by deep crashes). At the same time, the entry of institutional investors has also pushed the price up.
9. What’s The Appeal For Investors?
Zero and negative yields on traditional assets are driving hedge funds and even companies like MicroStrategy to pour cash into Bitcoin, which while being highly volatile has appreciated substantially over the long term. While nay-sayers have long said that Bitcoin’s value will go down to zero, many have recently had to revise their thinking — simply because enough people seem to believe in Bitcoin.
10. Why Is Bitcoin Compared To Gold?
As a scarce resource, gold has traditionally been a hedge against inflation. Governments can speed up their treasuries’ printing presses and thereby debase their currencies, but miners can’t flood markets with gold, goes the thinking. Part of Bitcoin’s appeal lies in the fact that it isn’t controlled by governments or their monetary policies, and that its supply is limited even more strictly than gold’s. Halvenings help slow down the mining of new coins and production will cease entirely at 21 million coins.
(The tally was more than 18.5 million at the end of 2020.) With the vast spending by governments and central banks in response to the pandemic raising fears of inflation after economies recover, more attention than ever is being paid to Bitcoin as “digital gold,” even as inflation remains muted.
11. What’s Happening With Institutional Investors?
They seem to be feeling more comfortable wading into Bitcoin in part because of better safeguards. The U.S. Treasury Department, for instance, has proposed requiring banks and other intermediaries to maintain records and submit reports to verify customer identities for certain cryptocurrency transactions. Over the past few years, Bitcoin has also developed a more substantial financial infrastructure. There are custody and trading services — with proper licenses and credentials — that cater specifically to the large regulated investors.
12. So Is This Another Bubble, Or Is Bitcoin Really Digital Gold?
That’s still unclear. As quickly as institutional investors got into it, they could get out of Bitcoin, pushing down prices dramatically. Bitcoin is still a thinly traded market, where so-called whales, controlling large quantities of coin, hold huge sway.
About 2% of anonymous accounts that can be tracked on the coin’s digital ledger control 95% of the available supply, according to researcher Flipside Crypto. A whale’s exit — a more likely event now that Bitcoin is the domain of not just believers but also pragmatic financiers — can send ripples throughout the ecosystem, and pop the bubble.
13. Could Another Cryptocurrency Supplant It?
As the number of cryptocurrencies and tokens continues to multiply — they now reach into the thousands — Bitcoin remains the best-known, time-tested and valuable. It’s also the one coin that’s considered to be a potential store of value. Others, such as Ethereum, are used for other things, such as issuing tokens for use in decentralized finance applications. While a digital-gold alternative could yet emerge, it’s increasingly looking unlikely.
14. How Can I Buy Bitcoin Or Invest In It?
There are a bunch of ways, all with different risks. People can buy the coins directly from exchanges like Coinbase. Accredited investors can also invest in vehicles like the Bitcoin Investment Trust, which tracks Bitcoin’s price. Now investors can buy or sell Bitcoin futures, and soon may be able to buy Bitcoin exchange-traded funds, once regulators feel comfortable with the idea.
But be warned: Even plenty of people who believe in Bitcoin’s future think some wild rides lie ahead. The big runup in Bitcoin’s price back in 2017 was followed by an 83% rout that lasted a year.

Jeffrey Gundlach Says Bitcoin May Be A Better Bet Than Gold
DoubleLine Capital LP chief and long-time gold bull Jeffrey Gundlach has changed his mind on the metal and considers Bitcoin a better trade.
Gundlach tweeted he’d been a long-term gold bull and U.S. dollar bear, but has turned neutral on both. Bitcoin may well be “the stimulus asset,” he said, a reference to the cryptocurrency’s rally amid a wave of cash pumped into the financial system during the pandemic.
I am a long term dollar bear and gold bull but have been neutral on both for over six months. Lots of liquid poured into a funnel creates a torrent. Bitcoin maybe The Stimulus Asset. Doesn’t look like gold is.
— Jeffrey Gundlach (@TruthGundlach) February 18, 2021
Gundlach’s comments are another sign the investment case for Bitcoin is winning over institutional money managers and possibly siphoning cash from the gold market. Historically, traders have turned to the precious metal as a way to play rising inflation expectations. But over the past year, it has been range-bound and gold exchange-traded funds have seen outflows.
Bitcoin, however, has captivated investors from billionaire Elon Musk to hedge fund moguls including Alan Howard and Paul Tudor Jones. Prices have quadrupled over the past year and shot through $52,000 this week. The digital token slipped 2% on Thursday to trade around $51,317.

Elon Musk Says BTC, ETH Prices “High” While Dunking On Peter Schiff
While Musk said Schiff “might as well” have crypto in lieu of gold deposit statements, he did warn that digital currency valuations may be running hot.
While his electric car company announced a Bitcoin purchase weeks ago, Elon Musk finally became a true Bitcoiner last night by engaging in a time-honored cryptoTwitter pastime: dunking on Peter Schiff.
Yesterday morning Schiff, the noted gold bug and Bitcoin skeptic, posted a Tweet thread in which he criticized Elon Musk’s comment that Bitcoin is a flawed currency, though still better than fiat alternatives:
According to @elonmusk “Bitcoin is almost as BS as fiat money.” So Musk regards both #Bitcoin and fiat as BS. I agree, I just think Bitcoin, which is digital fiat, is even more BS than the paper fiat issued by central banks. #Gold is not BS. It’s real money and better than both!
— Peter Schiff (@PeterSchiff) February 19, 2021
Schiff noted that, “as an engineer” the Tesla founder should know the difference between a “tangible element” and a “string of numbers,” and said that gold has greater utility relative to Bitcoin.
“Money isn’t data. Data can represent money but can’t replace it. Money improved barter, gold improved money, and data improved #gold. Bitcoin is a return to barter. All sellers will accept money. With #Bitcoin you must find a seller who has what you want and wants what you have,” Schiff concluded.
In response, the Tesla founder criticized Schiff’s view of third-party gold storage as an additional layer of trust, saying he “might as well have crypto.”
An email saying you have gold is not the same as having gold. You might as well have crypto.
Money is just data that allows us to avoid the inconvenience of barter.
That data, like all data, is subject to latency & error. The system will evolve to that which minimizes both.
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) February 20, 2021
Considering how flippant Musk has been in promoting the Dogecoin meme currency, he also hedged his statement with a perhaps surprising follow-up, warning that prices for Bitcoin and Ether are “high.”
While tempered, the Twitter statements are just the latest vote of confidence the world’s richest man has put into cryptocurrencies. Earlier this month Tesla used 7.7% of gross cash on hand to purchase Bitcoin, a sum worth $1.5 billion, and later followed up by saying “only a fool” wouldn’t seek investments beyond fiat.
Schiff, meanwhile, continues to be a punching bag so universal that even shawarma restaurants get in on the fun. While he’s recently admitted that Bitcoin isn’t the scam he once accused it of being, he remains resolutely in favor of physical bullion as an investment. His Twitter trash-talking carries on even as his bank remains under investigation.

Bitcoin Overtakes Gold In Investor Portfolio Allocation — JPMorgan Managing Director Nikolaos Panigirtzoglou
Bitcoin’s allocation in investor portfolios has reached 3.7 times that of gold when adjusted for volatility, according to Panigirtzoglou.
Bitcoin has now overtaken gold in investor portfolio allocation when adjusted for volatility, according to the JP Morgan analyst.
Panigirtzoglou said that, when adjusting for volatility, Bitcoin allocation in investor portfolios is 3.7 times greater than gold.
The analyst highlighted the significant inflows of over $10 billion into spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) since their approval in January and claimed the potential Bitcoin ETF market size could reach $62 billion, using gold as a benchmark.
Another report from JPM Securities predicts that the spot Bitcoin ETFs market could grow as large as $220 billion in the next two to three years:
“We estimate $220B of incremental flows will come into the ETFs over the next three years, which could also be quite impactful to Bitcoin’s price given the multiplier on capital.”
Bitcoin ETFs have proven to be a net positive for the crypto market, with the world’s largest cryptocurrency gaining over 45% in market cap in February. Net sales for spot Bitcoin ETFs climbed to $6.1 billion in February, compared to $1.5 billion in January.
The largest daily inflows to the spot Bitcoin ETFs peaked at over $1 billion on March 12, and analysts believe this number could rise further once outflows from the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust ETF stop.
With the Bitcoin halving just over a month away, the supply of daily BTC would be cut down in half, which could fuel the demand further and lead to a supply crisis within the next six months, predicts Ki Young Ju, the CEO of crypto analytic firm CryptoQuant.
After a prolonged crypto winter lasting nearly three years, spot Bitcoin ETF approvals became a catalyst for BTC’s mammoth price action that has pushed it past the last bull cycle’s all-time high of above $69,000, as well as opening the doors to institutional adoption led by the world’s largest asset manager, BlackRock.
Volatility
“We would still qualify this market activity as, ‘consolidating in the range of all-time highs.”’ said Stephane Ouellette, chief executive of FRNT Financial. “It’s not unusual in crypto to see such volatility around major pivot points.” said Dessislava Aubert, analyst at Kaiko.

Dollar Stores Suffer As Low-Income Consumers Struggle
Two rival discount chains report seeing similar problems in their customer base.
Dollar stores’ core customers are feeling squeezed. That makes it a tricky time for these companies to prove that their turnaround efforts are bearing fruit.
Dollar Tree said on Wednesday that lower-income consumers are struggling with inflation and reduced benefits under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, once known as food stamps.
It estimated that the decline in SNAP benefits pressured same-store sales at its Family Dollar chain by 5 percentage points in its quarter ended Feb. 3 compared with a year earlier.
Pandemic-era federal enhancements to food-stamp benefits ended for most states in March 2023. Dollar Tree rival Dollar General said on its earnings call Thursday that consumers are feeling the impact of the past two years of inflation:
They are giving priority to necessities-driven categories over discretionary ones and opting for private-label products.
Dollar General on Thursday said same-store sales rose 0.7% in its quarter ended Feb. 2 compared with a year earlier, better than the 1.1% decline analysts polled by Visible Alpha had penciled in.
Family Dollar, which is owned by Dollar Tree, saw same-store sales drop 1.2% from a year earlier in its corresponding quarter, worse than the 0.5% decline analysts were expecting.
The Dollar Tree chain, which is generally located in suburbs and caters more to higher-income consumers looking for party favors and seasonal decor, fared better: Comparable sales rose 6.3%, better than Wall Street expectations of 5.4% growth.
Both Dollar Tree and Dollar General are in turnaround mode at the moment under seasoned dollar-store executives. Dollar Tree has been undergoing extensive repairs since Chief Executive Rick Dreiling took the helm last year.
These have included store revamps and price investments at the struggling Family Dollar chain.
On Wednesday, Dollar Tree said it would close 600 unprofitable Family Dollar stores this year, in addition to about 400 Family Dollar and Dollar Tree stores that will close at the end of their lease term. This seems to be a sensible move:
While Dollar Tree estimates the closures will reduce its top line by about $730 million, it also estimates it will help boost companywide earnings by about 30 cents a share on an annualized basis. Most of its new store openings this fiscal year will be Dollar Trees, which have better returns and performance.
Dollar General, meanwhile, brought back its former CEO Todd Vasos in October to help improve the business, which was struggling from underinvestment in stores and poor in-stock levels.
Under what Vasos calls a “back-to-basics” strategy, the company has been reducing SKU counts, improving on-time inventory deliveries and staffing its stores better—especially the checkout areas.
In the earnings call on Thursday, Vasos said the company would eliminate self-checkout in more than 300 of its highest-theft stores and convert the self-checkout stations in 9,000 stores in a way that will direct customers first to staffed registers.
Both companies’ stock prices dropped following their respective earnings calls, with Dollar General falling 5.1% on Thursday and Dollar Tree shedding 14% on Wednesday.
In addition to lukewarm results at Family Dollar, investors may have been taken aback by Dollar Tree’s lack of confidence in its previously announced target of $10 in annual earnings per share by 2026.
On the earnings call, Dreiling said that while the company is “continuing to march toward that goal,” the economic environment has been tough and that the company is dealing with “high shrink numbers,” referring to theft.
Low-income consumers’ challenged wallets could mask the effect of the companies’ improvements in the first half of the year. J.P. Morgan estimates that U.S. consumers face a $2 billion headwind in the first half of this year compared with the last one after accounting for on-year changes in tax refunds, Social Security benefits, SNAP benefits, gas spending and student-debt repayment.
This should, however, improve in the second half of the year, in large part because the negative effects of resuming student-debt repayments—which began in October—will hit harder in the first part of the year.
In the second half, changes in those wallet impacts should turn into a tailwind of $34 billion in total, per J.P. Morgan estimates.
After the recent drops, shares of both Dollar General and Dollar Tree look cheap as a multiple of forward-12-month sales. On that basis, Dollar Tree is 11% cheaper than its five-year average, while Dollar General sports a 33% discount.
That makes now a reasonable entry point for investors in the market for a retail turnaround story.
